Tolerance Induction Program
The Tolerance Induction Program™ (TIP) is a food allergy treatment program that helps children and young adults overcome their severe food allergies. With the TIP, patients build a tolerance to their allergens through the escalation of food proteins similar in structure to their allergens (biosimilar proteins). For example, a person allergic to hen egg will first start eating quail and duck eggs before ever eating a hen egg.
The program consists of a series of food introductions and challenges. New foods are introduced in the clinic and then dosed in increasing amounts at home. The TIP refers to these foods as treatment foods, and they are eaten in the evening for approximately 10-12 weeks. You are required to wait 15 minutes between each treatment food, and you cannot shower or exercise for at least an hour after you have finished dosing the last food. At the end of the cycle when you have reached the highest dosing amount, you come back to the clinic for a food challenge. At the food challenge, patients eat larger quantities of their treatment foods to see how their system responds. After eating the challenge foods, the clinic has the patient exercise non-stop for 5 minutes to make sure you do not have a reaction. If you successfully complete a challenge, these treatment foods will move into maintenance and be eaten every day in the morning.
