Today I ate 22 peanuts at my first Tolerance Visit Challenge. When I return home I will eat 18 peanuts a day for four months. One day a week they want me to eat a variable amount of peanuts ranging from cross contamination to more than 18 peanuts. It’s been three months since my last trip to California.  We were scheduled to go back this week, but the Food Allergy Institute would like for me to continue to increase my dosage of peanuts at home before coming back. This decision was made after they looked at my lab work for peanuts that we had done locally. I will escalate for another eight weeks to 14 peanuts at home and then will challenge 22 peanuts at my next appointment…

Visit 7 Cleared for Egg!

We travelled to this appointment during my Spring Break and made a detour to Palm Springs for a few days beforehand. This was an exciting visit as I was cleared to eat egg! In order to clear egg, I needed to eat 30 ml of hen egg white (egg white from approximately one egg) and then exercise for 5 minutes. This cycle has been tough! I really hate eating the same things every day for breakfast, and I especially hate eating scallop and lobster brownies. During this appointment, I challenged quail white, lobster, and peanut, and introduced duck white and crab. Once I complete 7 days of 240 mg of peanut, I will have reached cross contamination. Cross contamination includes foods that are labeled: made in a facility, made on same line, or may contain or made with peanut oil. Visit #2 Peanut Introduction

On my first appointment, I challenged quail egg yolk, flax seed, and brazil nut. On the second day of appointments, we introduced duck egg yolk, clam, and peanut. The clinic sent us home with bags of flavored gummies that contained peanut. I started out at 0.4 mg daily and increased to 16 mg. We stayed at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Long Beach Airport where they offer ping pong, cornhole and a nice gym.

Launch is considered the official start of the tolerance induction program (TIP) and consists of 4-5 days of appointments. Day 1 – Patch placement. The patch contains physical food allergens that were placed on my back and had to remain there for 24 hours. I could not get wet or sweaty. My first appointment at the Southern California Food Allergy Institute (SCFAI) was in July of 2022. They refer to this initial appointment as on-boarding when they perform blood tests and skin prick tests. The results from the skin prick test and blood test help them develop my food dosing strategy.
